Essential Guide for Winter Activities in Quebec Province

This page will hopefully help tourists prepare for the cold season in the province of Quebec. I'm covering topics such as how cold it gets in Quebec, what to wear in winter, whether to expect snow for Christmas and more broadly what is going on in Quebec during winter. So if you’re looking for things to do in Quebec in winter, you’re in the right place.

What is the Weather like in Quebec in Winter

How cold is winter in Quebec and Montreal

Winter in Quebec City begins with the winter solstice, typically around December 21 or 22, and ends on the spring equinox, around March 19 or 20. But, the cold weather often arrives earlier, starting from mid-November.

From mid-November to mid-December, daytime temperatures might occasionally rise above 0°C (32°F), but they often drop below 0°C after sunset.

Starting mid-December, expect daytime temperatures between -5°C (23°F) and -15°C (14°F), and nighttime temperatures ranging from -10°C (14°F) to -20°C (5°F). This is just a range of common temperatures in Quebec City and Montreal. Every year and every week is different though. Some days, it can be -35°C (-31.0°F).

Coldest month of the year in Quebec

February is the coldest month of the year in Montreal and Quebec City. January is the second coldest month of the year. November and March both also feature relatively cold temperatures, but nothing like January and February.

Temperatures in February often range from -15°C (5°F) to -25°C (-13°F) during the day. The coldest I've actually seen on the thermometer is -37°C (-35°F).

Does Quebec Have A White Christmas?

Unlike New York City and Toronto, Quebec almost always has a white Christmas.

Montreal is warmer than Quebec City and for that reason, Quebec City is a safer bet for a white Christmas.

Some years, Mother Nature leaves us hanging until the 23rd or 24th of December. Other years, the whole province is covered in snow from the end of November!

As of 18 December 2023, there is not much snow left on the ground in Quebec City and Montreal. We have had rain and “warm” days so most of the snow has now melted. There is no snow storm on the forecast between now and Christmas Day.

I am starting to think we will not have a white Christmas in Quebec in 2023, but things can change quickly!

What to Wear for Winter

Dressing appropriately is key to enjoying winter in the province of Quebec. If it’s your first time visiting this part of the world during winter, you probably wonder what you need to pack.

My recommendation is to be prepared for the worst. Winter can only be fun if you’re not freezing.

Winter Clothes Packing List

  • Head
Wear a warm beanie or hat. The best ones have a polar fleece band at the base for extra ear warmth.
  • Neck Protection
Use a scarf, neck warmer or balaclava. For snow activities, neck warmers and balaclava are far more appropriate than a scarf because they are in direct contact with the skin. A scarf is never perfectly air tight.
  • Upper Body Layers
Most people will wear a t-shirt, add a fleece or sweater and top with a waterproof winter jacket.
  • Hand Protection
Wear warm gloves or mittens. If you intend to do snow activities, look for waterproof ones.
  • Lower Body Layers
Comfortable pants and layer with waterproof snow pants.
  • Feet
Warm, moisture-wicking socks and waterproof, insulated boots.
  • Thermals
On very cold days or if you’re not used to the cold and plan on being outside a lot, it’s a good idea to have thermals.
